Standard pumps for industrial plants

Standard and block pumps for industrial use

Structure of a standard pump

A complete standard pump unit consists of:
• a standard pump with free shaft end
• a coupling
• a coupling guard
• a drive
• a base plate
An electric drive consists of a standard motor and, if necessary, a frequency converter.
The length and height dimensions as well as the connection dimensions are specified in the standard.
As a compact version of the standard pump, there are close-coupled pumps in which the motor is directly attached and which do not require a base plate.

What does a standard describe for standard pumps?

First and foremost, the connection dimensions and sizes are standardized so that pumps from different manufacturers are interchangeable or can be replaced 1 to 1 in the system.
The performance of the standard pumps is also specified.
There are the standards:
• EN 733 (formerly DIN 24255, water standard)
• EN 22858 / ISO 2858 (chemical standard)

Standard water pumps

The best known and most commonly used volute casing pump is the standardized water pump according to EN733. This pump is equipped with a closed radial impeller, an axial suction nozzle and a radially positioned discharge nozzle, centered above the suction nozzle. The pump is installed horizontally on a base plate and is connected to the drive with a short or long coupling. The long coupling allows the slide-in unit to be removed without having to dismantle the pump housing and drive. These standard pumps are used for pumping water, heat or cold conductive fluids, oily liquids and, somewhat less frequently, aggressive liquids – whereby reliability and energy efficiency are the most important factors.

Standard chemical pumps

The second best-known volute casing pump is the standard pump to EN 22858, also known as the standard chemical pump. This pump is equipped with a closed radial impeller with back vanes to balance the axial thrust, an axial suction nozzle and a radially positioned discharge nozzle, centered above the suction nozzle. The pump is installed horizontally on a base plate and is connected to the drive with a short or long coupling. The long coupling allows the slide-in unit to be removed without having to dismantle the pump housing and drive. These standard pumps are used for pumping clean and aggressive liquids, whereby the materials are designed according to their durability in regard to the liquids.

Standard water close-coupled pumps

Volute casing pumps in close-coupled design, with capacities according to EN 733, are equipped with a closed radial impeller, an axial suction nozzle and a radially positioned discharge nozzle, centered above the suction nozzle. The drive, a flanged standard motor, is connected to the pump housing via a lantern – and the drive shaft is connected to the pump shaft via a short rigid coupling. These pumps are installed horizontally – and are used for pumping water, heat or cold conductive media, oily liquids and occasionally also for aggressive liquids – whereby the key features of these pumps are their small footprint, energy efficiency and reliability.

Application description

Standard water pumps are used in industrial and process engineering as well as in municipal technology. These pumps are suitable for a limited number of pumped fluids and a limited temperature range, which is why the range of different materials is relatively limited.

Main application area:

• Pumping of pure or aggressive liquids that do not chemically or mechanically attack the pump materials
• Water supply systems
• Cooling circuits
• Swimming pool technology
• Fire extinguishing systems
• Irrigation systems
• Drainage systems
• Heating systems
• Air conditioning systems
• Sprinkler systems

Standardized chemical pumps are specially designed for industrial and process engineering, as well as for power plants, refineries and other petrochemical applications. Due to the wide variety of applications and pumped media, as well as the wide range of temperature applications, the variety of materials and possible sealing materials is also very large.

Main application area:

• Alcohol industry
• Chemical industry (aggressive / other liquids)
• Conventional power plants
• Food industry / beverage industry
• Seawater desalination / reverse osmosis
• Paper industry / pulp industry
• Petrochemical industry (aggressive / other liquids)
• Refinery
• Sugar industry
